Who We Are & Why Community-Based Solutions Matter
Over 300,000 women and girls in North Carolina are living below the poverty line, leaving many without access to essential period hygiene supplies, during an already vulnerable time in their lives. In response to this growing need, Kim and I created Her Power Project to combat the stigma surrounding menstruation, bring focus to menstrual equity, and help bring dignity to menstruators in our community.
With the incredible support of Launch Apex and several local businesses, we have already ‘ collected enough supplies to begin providing support in two local schools starting in January 2026. We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of community support and are excited to continue this journey toward creating lasting, meaningful change across Southern Wake County.
We recognize that we are sitting in a place of privilege simply by being able to offer help and that awareness is at the core of who we are. This blog is intended to become a safe, welcoming space for information and conversations that are often discussed under the lens of generations of stigma and shame. Community is one of our guiding principles, and with that in mind, our goal is to foster a sense of trust and safety amongst our neighbors. Since we live in the community we aim to serve, it is especially important for us to lead with dignity. As we continue our work, we will carry the support of our community with us as we work towards a world where menstrual equity no longer feels like a foreign concept.
When we all work towards the same goal-uplifting our community-the impact of change feels bigger. When women feel secure during moments they have only ever associated with shame, that safety stays with them. Work and school no longer come with the silent anxiety of checking mirrors or asking a friend to walk a few steps behind you hoping that you don’t have a little red dot forming on the back of your pants causing you to walk around the rest of the day with a sweatshirt tied around your waist. Change does not have to come from those with the most power or money. When we show up as allies, we create the possibility of lasting impact.
So, hello! We’re Her Power Project and we’re new here. Let us know how we can help you.
